2011 Competition 9mm
John Browning's classic 1911 design remains a competition pistol, but it received a major makeover when STDs took the original design and made it into a high-powered pistol. Those graphics proved popular, and although the STI is now known as the Staccato, the style lives on. At the 2021 UPSSA Nationals, the STI and Staccato rifles were most used by Open Class shooters with 29 percent of them choosing, and the Limited and L10 with 18 percent of them choosing.

The Staccato XL ($3,599, staccato2011.com) is a full-size pistol for 2011 that features Staccato's FlaTec dampening system. The all-steel construction results in an empty weight of 38 ounces (sans magazine), and meets all UPSSA, Steel Challenge and IDPA weight limits. The stainless steel barrel is 5.4 inches long, has a 1:16-inch twist, and has a nice feed color and closed muzzle crown. Like the other 2011 models, the Staccato XL features a front barrel and uses a bull barrel. Front and rear cocking serrations adorn the slide, and a Picatinny rail on the dust cover allows for the installation of lights or lasers.

Features include a Dawson Precision front end on a dovetail with an adjustable shaft. A red stick came with the gun, but any color can be added. The back view is Staccato 2011 T.A.S. which can be replaced by a black blade. For those wishing to install a rear sight, Dawson Precision has its own Optic-Ready system ($139.95) that allows for the installation of many popular reflex sights.

Functional controls include an extended left-side magazine release, an extended combat safety and a left-side slide release lever. The G2's grips are well-checked on the front row, sides and rear row, and the fully extended magazine is so large that one would have to be a complete maladroit to miss it. The safety grip is medium speed.
As for the pull, I measured 2.6 pounds on my digital scale with a slow take, a clean break and a quick recovery.

The Staccato XL comes in a simple wooden case that holds 17-round magazines, one 20-round magazine, red-and-white fiber-optic retractable sticks, lock and owner's manual.

From the box, I made a quick run across the field to clear the shot. I was surprised at how easy it was to sew up the slide, and I have to think it was because of the FlaTec recovery system. If you don't have a barrel, dismounting is easy: slide the slide back into the parking position, push the slide stop pin and slide the upper unit into the frame. This style is less heavy than the 1911.
The main feature of the Staccato XL is the Minor Caliber gun (125 Power Factor), so I wanted to try different bullet weights. Some anglers prefer the gentle "push" of a heavy bullet, while others prefer the recoil of lighter slugs and feel that makes them recoil faster.
For the heavy bullet I used the Federal Syntech 150 bullet load, which has proven popular and effective. The 123-grain Lapua FMJ and Remington's 115-grain FMJ were medium weight loads.

The iron challenge has no Power Factor, and very light loads are preferred by tactical shooters. For that reason, I loaded the Atlanta Arms 100-grain FMJ Steel Challenge. I've never programmed this load, but from the returns it produces there is no way it does 125 PF. Atlanta Arms notes that some guns may require a lighter bushing for reliable operation, and I thought it would be a good test of the Staccato FlaTec system.
For the original "Mouse Puff" load, I put in my 9 mm steel challenge. This is the best DG 125 bullet with VihtaVuori N310 capable of up to 930 f.ps. then rotate the ejected cases outside the ejection port. Recoil does not exceed the maximum velocity of the .22 Long Rifle. My Smith & Wesson M&P C.O.R.E. it will handle this load—if it is cleaned before the game—but many other guns will not. However, it makes it easier for me to retrieve my copper, because it will all be in a neat pile two feet to my right.

After that, I went to my backyard and set up the rifle at 25 yards with a medium weight Lapua. At first it was high and fair, but the view quickly improved. Next was a check on each load, not only looking at the supply and operation, but also the method of removal.

Standard pressure Federal Syntech, Lapua and Remington loads showed a solid release of 4.5 feet and about 30 degrees to the rear. The Atlanta Arms 100-grain load kicked about three feet and 30 degrees. My "Mouse Puff" load did the same to my gun, and it was covered in a bunch. who has two clean legs to my right. It seems that the Staccato XL is insensitive to very small shots.
Since I couldn't find a suitable official bore in my collection of 5.4 inch barrels, I set up white cut targets and used conversion drills from low range to 10 to 20 yards. All three magazines were used, and as usual with new mags, getting a full load out of them was difficult at first, but easy to use.

The gun exploded with all the loads and magazines. Attractive visuals and beautiful fireworks make beating easy, but what stood out was the lack of lips and fast bike riding. This is not to say that there was no muzzle rise, but the gun fired more than I expected—especially with full-power factory loads. I run these conversion courses with the PACT Club Timer and get a good feel for what my normal parts are like on a semi-automatic or revolver. The flat track and fast cycling made the Staccato XL very fast.

An accuracy test from a 25 yard rest was next. As the accompanying accuracy table shows, this gun will shoot.
Former Navy SEAL Laurent Picard was one of the few experienced shooters impressed by the flat shooting and fast cycling of the Staccato XL. Make sure the gun is level on the next target, and the fired bag is less than 10 inches from the ejection port. (Photo by Chris Christian)
Neither hole required a match, so I took the Staccato XL to my Steel Challenge team's practice day and dialed the instrument from the floor. I had a bunch of Remington 115 ammo and I used it. The Staccato XL caught the attention of other shooters (some of the Grand Master, Master or A team), who were all eager to try it out. They were as impressed as I was with the wide shooting features and fast cycling features. And I was even more impressed when I told them they were shooting full power plants.
At this point, there have been over 600 rounds through the gun with nothing past my original thread and lube, and there has never been a single problem of any kind. The Staccato XL 2011 9 mm is the perfect addition to an already popular rifle line.
