The Chinese jet has drawn comparisons to the F-35 since the jets locked in military engagements in the 2020s.
The F-35 aircraft was introduced to the US military in July 2015. There are three types of aircraft: conventional takeoff and landing F-35A, short takeoff and vertical landing F-35B and carrier F-35C. The variants are differentiated according to how the jet takes off and lands.
Lockheed Martin touts the F-35 as "the world's most advanced fighter jet," featuring ultra-low stealth, advanced sensors, information fusion and network connectivity.
The encounter between F-35s and J-20s in the East China Sea has impressed a US Air Force general, the South China Morning Post reported.
Chinese Military Jet Comes Within 20ft Of Us Air Force Plane
In an interview with the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies in March, U.S. Pacific Air Force chief Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach said China's ability to defend nations is "robust."
"It's a little early to say exactly what they intend with the J-20, really what we've seen is air superiority," Wilsbach said in an interview. Chinese pilots indicated that the aircraft flew "very well".
The J-20 is a long, wide aircraft: its length is 23 meters and its height is 5 meters.
According to aviation website Aero Corner, the aircraft has a top speed of 2,468 kmph and a range of 5,926 km. In comparison, the F-35A has a top speed of 1,960 kilometers per hour and a range of 2,200 kilometers, according to the Royal Australian Air Force.

Some notable variants are the J-20A, the first version of the aircraft, and the J-20S, the first twin-seat stealth fighter.
According to the Global Security Military website, China has the capability to develop the aircraft into several other variants, including bombers, electric war planes and carrier-based variants.
The planes are being upgraded with Russian engines and WS-15 turbofan engines after the burnout, the South China Morning Post reported in March. As part of China's localization program, all J-20s will be equipped with Chinese-made engines like the WS-15, a source told the outlet.
In a 2020 report, a Hong Kong newspaper said the engine upgrade "brought its performance closer to that of the F-22". WS-15 engines will increase combat capability and combat capability.
U.s. Pilots Say New Chinese Stealth Fighter Could Become Equal Of F 22, F 35
In the early 2000s, preliminary prices for the aircraft were quoted at 450 million to 500 million Chinese renminbi, or about $60 million to $70 million, The Diplomat reported. According to estimates from various reports, the cost of the aircraft has increased significantly since then.
According to the South China Morning Post, the aircraft's research and development costs are estimated at more than 30 billion renminbi. Chgdu J-20 (Chinese: 歼-20; pinyin: Jiān-Èrlíng), also known as the Mighty Dragon. Chinese: 威龙; Pinyin: Wēilong),
There are three types of aircraft: the initial production model J-20A, the thrust-vectoring J-20B and the twin-seat team capable J-20S.
China has become the second country in the world and the first in Asia to develop an operational stealth aircraft.
China Is Sending Its Most Advanced Fighter Jet To Patrol Disputed East And South China Seas
The J-20 originated from the J-XX program in the late 1990s. In 2008, the PLAAF approved Chgdu Aerospace Corporation's proposal, Project 718; Xiang's proposed aircraft was larger than the J-20.
Chgdu previously used the double-canard configuration in the J-9, its first design and canceled in 1970, and the J-10.
In 2009, a senior PLAAF official revealed that the first flight was expected in 2010–11, with a 2019 service test date.
On 22 December 2010, the first J-20 prototype underwent high-speed taxi tests out of Chgdu Aircraft Design Institute (CADI).

The first prototype was painted with the number "2001". In May 2012, the second prototype flew at the CADI facility.
Several modifications were made to the third J-20 prototype, numbered "2011", which made its first flight in March 2014.
The new aircraft introduced improved DSI (Supersonic Diverterless Inlet) intakes, intrusion layers, streamlined underwing fairings and redesigned vertical stabilizers. Analysts noted new equipment and devices for multi-role operations, such as integrated targeting pods for precision-guided munitions and six additional passive infrared can also be seen around the aircraft.
In December 2015, military inspectors saw the initial production version (LRIP) of the J-20.

The LRIP aircraft exposed the previously painted dielectric surfaces for the prototype, which included a variety of ssors, or radar-absorbing materials.
In October 2017, Chinese state media reported that the design of the J-20 had been finalized and was ready for mass production as well as combat readiness.
In January 2019, Chinese media reported that there were rumors of development of a twin-seat variant of the J-20 for use in strategic bombing, electronic warfare and carrier strike roles.
In November 2019, a J-20 painted in yellow primer was spotted by Difsey observers at the Chgdu Aerospace Corporation production facility during its flight tests. The aircraft is equipped with a new variant of the WS-10 Taihang engine and has a serrated afterburner nozzle to render stealth.
Pakistan Air Force Inducts New Batch Of Chinese Fighter Jets
Chinese media reported that a new variant of the J-20, the J-20B, was unveiled on 8 July 2020 and began mass production on the same day. The only change was that the J-20B would be equipped with thrust vector control.
There have been conflicting reports regarding the exact engine type. Analyst Andreas Rupprecht cast doubt on the use of Russian engines on the J-20, as he believed the J-20 was using a variant of the WS-10, which he called the WS-10C. This engine has improved thrust, more stealthy serrated nozzles and higher reliability, but it is not designed to vector thrust like the WS-10 TVC shown on the J-10 at the 2018 China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition.
Analyst Jamie Hunter called the new engine variant the WS-10B-3, a Chinese thrust-vectoring engine shown at the 2018 Zhuhai Airshow.
In January 2021, the South China Morning Post reported that China would replace the Russian engine on the J-20 stealth fighter with a Chinese engine called the WS-10C.
China Offers First Glimpse Of Chengdu J 20 Stealth Fighter
In June 2021, Chinese media confirmed that the aviation brigade was deployed with the J-20A enhanced variant that integrates the domestic WS-10C engines.
Despite the replacement, the WS-10C is considered a second interim solution before the Xian WS-15 passes evaluation. Furthermore, the WS-10C will not be equipped on the J-20B, a thrust-vectoring version of the J-20 that entered mass production in 2019, which still requires further testing. In general, Chinese engineers believe that the WS-10C is comparable in performance to the AL-31F,
In January 2021, the Aviation Industry Corporation of China released a computer set of the twin-seat variant of the J-20 fighter jet to commemorate the flight attendant's 10th anniversary.
In February 2021, a South China Morning Post infographic showed a twin-seat J-20 variant powered by a WS-10C thrust vector.

The twin-seat design allows the second operator to coordinate attack and reconnaissance missions from other fridley aircraft via a "wingman loyalty" system and a network connected by ssors or unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAV). Another operator's advantage includes limited mental capacity for an individual and the potential to better interpret and exploit orms sorry data that can overload processing, especially in a combat environment.
As of December 2022, Chinese military analysts indicated that the WS-15 was entering the final stages of testing and development.
In late December, a prototype of the new J-20 variant was seen at the Chgdu Aerospace Corporation facility. The new variant was first painted yellow and differed in aircraft design from earlier J-20 aircraft, with a low-profile bladed canopy intended to optimize transonic flight performance and manoeuvrability. The new prototype could be used to test the WS-15 engine and thrust-vectoring.
The J-20 has a long and composite fuselage, with a chiseled nose section and a frameless canopy. Immediately behind the cabin is a low-observable diverterless supersonic inlet (DSI). All moving surfaces of the canard and the pronounced dihedral are placed behind the intake, then the leading edge is trimmed and the trailing edge is moved forward to merge with the delta wing. The posterior segment consists of two or three fins that are external, short but broad ventrally and conventional or less-observable.
