2011 Handgun Review

John Browning's classic 1911 design remains a force in the action pistol competition, but it received a major overhaul when the STI took the basic design and took it into the high-end pistol range. These weapons proved extremely popular, and although the STI is now known as Staccato, the trend continues. At the 2021 USPSA Nationals, the various STI and Staccato handgun models were the most used by Open Class shooters, with 29 percent choosing, followed by the L10 Limited with 18 percent choosing.

The Staccato XL ($3,599, staccato2011.com) is a full-size pistol from 2011 that incorporates the Staccato FlaTec recoil mitigation system. The all steel construction results in an empty weight of 38 inches (without magazine) and meets all division weight limits per USPSA, Challenge Steel and IDPA. The stainless steel barrel is 5.4 inches with a 1:16-inch twist, with a well-shaped feed ramp and reduced muzzle crown. Similar to other 2011 models, the Staccato XL dispenses with the original barrel and uses a tapered bull barrel. Serrations adorn the front and rear lip, and a Picatinny rail on the dust cover allows for mounting lights or lasers.

The Dawson Precision front sights consist of a dovetail mount with a fiber optic stock. The red rod comes with the gun, but any color can be installed. The rear view of the Staccato 2011 T.A.S. adjustable with smooth black iron. For sights to install as a replacement sight, Dawson Precision has its Optic-Ready System ($139.95), which allows the mounting of several popular reflex sights.

Operational controls consist of an extended left magazine release, extended ambidextrous battery protection, and a left side release lever. The G2's hands are well-marked on the front strap, side and rear straps, and the extended magazine is large enough that it must be a total badass that's missing. He holds in his hand the safety of a modest low speed.

As for trigger pressure, I measured 2.6 pounds on my digital gauge with a light hand, clean break, and quick reset.

2011 Handgun Review

The Staccato 40 ships in a soft case with two 17-round magazines, a twenty-round magazine, a red and white fiber optic, a ubiquitous lock and a spare owner's manual.

Review: Sti Dvc Steel 9 Mm

From the box I did a quick field strip to lube the gun. I was surprised at how easy it was to set up the slide and assume it was because of the FlaTec's jumping system. With no barrel cap, removal is simple: bring the slide back to the notch, push the locking pin, and the upper unit slides out of the frame. The process is much less complicated than for the 1911.

The Staccato XL primary parts as a smaller caliber pistol (125 power factor), so I wanted to test different bullet weights. Some shooters prefer a lighter "pit" bullet, while others prefer a lighter "pit" slug and feel it brings them back on target faster.

For a heavy bullet, I used a 150-grain Federal Syntech load, which proved popular and effective. Includes 123 grain FMJ and 115 grain Remington FMJ medium weight loads.

Playing The Long Game With Sti's Staccato C

The steel challenge has no force factor and lighter loads are used by experienced shooters. For this reason, the 100-gram FMJ Steel Challenger load of Atlanta was included. This load will never be convenient, but because of the case that it produces, there is no way that 125 PF will do. Atlanta Arms notes that some guns may require a lighter recoil to require a certain spring function, and I thought it would be a good experiment to jump on the Staccato FlaTec system.

For a true "Mouse Puff" load, I also included my personal steel challenge 9mm load. That is, a 125 grain coated lead DG bullet is enough to hit a VihtaVuori N310 at 930 f.p.s. and the start of the case is ignited by the ejection port. The excess is not much more than a high velocity .22 long load rifle. My Smith & Wesson M&P C.O.R.E. he will deal with this crime if he fights violently, but many other weapons will not. It is easier for me to get my copper back, though, because everything will be conveniently piled on my right two feet.

I then aimed at my backyard range and cocked the gun at 25 yards with a medium weight Lapua load. At first it was a little high and straight, but the view was quickly established. Each load is then reviewed, not only with regard to feed and function, but also to the model of ejection.

Staccato C2 2011

The Syntech, Lapua, and Remington federal standards provided a strong release pressure of about 4.5 feet and about 30 degrees to the rear. Atlanta Arms' 100-gram load was shot about three feet 30 degrees. My "Mouse Puff" charge did the same thing it does to my gun and ended up in a neat pile two feet to my right. Staccato XL ammo seems to be the least sensitive.

Unable to find a suitable matching holster in my collection for the 5.4 inch barrel, I set up white cut targets and did cross drills from a low position at 10-20 yards. All three magazines were used, and as a new magazine is common, it was a little difficult at first to be fully loaded, but it got easier with practice.

The Lapua 123-grain FMJ was the most accurate load in the Staccato XL 9mm, but the others weren't far behind. (Photo by Chris Christian)

The cannon was cleared with all loads and magazines. Sharp sights and an exquisite trigger made it easy to nail quick shots, but what stood out was the lack of muzzle lift and a quick cycle. Not to say that it wasn't any muzzle rise, but the gun shot was a lot flatter than I expected, especially with the factory loads at full force. I run these transition drills with the Compact Club timer and have a good idea of what normal splits are with semi-auto or revolver. Flattened rebound and cycle speed made the Staccato XL run significantly faster.

Review Of The Cwa Custom 1911 22

My 25 yard bench test accuracy was like this. As the attached chart shows, this gun shoots accurately.

First Class Sergeant Laurent Picard was one of several expert shooters impressed with the flat-shooting and fast-cycling Staccato XL. Note that the gun is level at the nearest target, in case I fired less than 10 inches from the ejection port. (Photo by Chris Christian)

By no means did it mean a match, so I took the Staccato 40 to my place to challenge my steel club practice day and called the iron from below. 115 grain Remington loads and I used plenty of grain. Staccato 40 captured the hearts of other shooters (some in Master, Master, or Class) who were all eager to explore it. They are as impressed as I am with the marks of shooting planes and fast cycling. I was even more impressed when I told them they were releasing full power factory loads.

2011 Handgun Review

Here's over 600 rounds through the guns, nothing but my original engine and lube, no tech of any kind. The 2011 Staccato XL 9mm is a worthy addition to the already popular line of handguns.
