2011 Gun Review

John Browning's classic 1911 design still holds sway in the action pistol competition, but it got a significant upgrade when the STI took the basic design and made it into a big gun. Those guns proved to be very popular, and even though the STI is now called the Staccato, the trend continues. At the 2021 USPSA Nationals, the STI and Staccato models were the most used by Open Class shooters with 29 percent choosing them, and the Limited and L10 models with 18 percent choosing them.

The Staccato XL ($3,599, staccato2011.com) is a full-size pistol for 2011 that includes Staccato's FlaTec recoil reduction system. The all-steel construction results in an empty weight of 38 ounces (sans magazine), and makes the weight limit for all USPSA, Steel Challenge and IDPA classes. The stainless steel barrel is 5.4 inches, has a twist of 1:16 inches, has a well-shaped feed ramp and a muzzle crown intended for recoil. Similar to other 2011 models, the Staccato XL ditches the original barrel and uses bull coned barrels. . The front and back of the slide are decorated, and the Picatinny rail on the dust cover allows for the mounting of lights or lasers.

The background is Staccato 2011 T.A.S. It can be fixed with a blank black blade. For those looking to install aftermarket sights, Dawson Precision has its own Optic-Ready System ($139.95) that allows for the installation of many popular sights.

Action controls include an extended left-side magazine release, an extended combat safety and a left-side slide release lever. The G2 G2 is well screened front, side and rear, and the magazine is large enough that one would have to be a complete maladroit to miss it. Holding security is slow.

For the trigger pull, I measured 2.6 pounds on my digital scale. Slow intake, clean breaks and quick fixes.

With a trigger pull of less than three pounds, the Staccato XL trigger cleans with an easy reset. Immediately. The G2 grips are well tested. (Photo by Peter Fountain)

The Staccato XL comes in a soft case that holds two 17-round magazines, one 20-round magazine, a red and white fiber optic cable, a universal cable lock and an owner's manual.

From the box, I took a quick field line to get the shot out. I was surprised at how easy it was to retract the slide, and I have to think it's because of the FlaTec recoil system. Without pouring into the barrel, disassembly is easy: return the slide to the cut witness, push the slide pin and slide the upper unit out of the frame. The process is less complicated than the 1911.

The main role of the Staccato XL is as a Minor Caliber (125 Power Factor) gun, so I wanted to test different bullet weights. Some shooters prefer the softer "push" recoil of heavier bullets, while others prefer the "quick" recoil of lighter slugs and feel that gets them back on target faster.

For heavier bullets, I use the Federal Syntech 150-grain load, which has proven popular and effective. Remington's 123-grain Lapua FMJ and 115-grain FMJ round out the middleweight loads.

Staccato P 2011 Review

Steel Challenge has no Power Factor and very light recoil loads are preferred by professional shooters. For that reason, I loaded the Atlanta Arms 100-grain FMJ Steel Challenge. I have never programmed this load, but from the recovery it produces there is no way it does 125 PF. Atlanta Arms noted that some guns may need a lighter recoil spring for reliable operation, and I thought that would be a good test for the Staccato FlaTec recoil system.

For the original "Mouse Puff" load, I included my personal 9 mm Steel Challenge load. This is a 125 grain DG bullet combined with VihtaVuori N310 which is enough to get 930 f.ps. and the charge cycle is fired from the discharge port. The recoil is no more than a .22 high velocity revolver. My Smith & Wesson M&P C.O.R.E. It will handle this load - if it is cleaned before the game - but most other guns will not. However, it made it easy for me to get my copper back, because it would all be within two clean meters to my right.

Next, I headed to my rear position and set the gun up at 25 yards with a medium Lapua load. At first it was high and fair, but it quickly became a tourist spot. The next step is to check each load, not only looking at the food and performance, but also the way it is fired.

Staccato Cs Review: Best Compact 2011 For Carry?

Standard pressure Federal Syntech, Lapua and Remington loads show a solid release of 4.5 feet and about 30 degrees to the rear. The Atlanta Arms 100-grain is loaded at about three feet and 30 degrees. My "Mouse Puff" load did the same thing it did to my gun, and wound two clean feet on my right side. It seems that the Staccato XL is not a sensitive bullet.

Since I couldn't find a legitimate stock among my cache of 5.4-inch barrels, I set up a white cut target and ran a practice conversion from the low fairway at 10 to 20 yards. All three magazines were used, and as usual with new mags, loading them full was a little difficult at first, but became easy to use.

The gun was removed along with all the loads and magazines. Sharp visibility and bright acceleration make quick claps easy, but what stands out is the bike's lack of ups and downs. This is not to say that there is no muzzle expansion, but the gun shoots a lot more than I expected - especially with a full factory load. I practice these changes with the PACT Club Timer and feel good in my regular range with a semi-automatic or revolver. Fast moving and cycling with the Staccato XL is remarkably fast.

An accuracy test from rest on my bench at 25 yards follows. As the accompanying accuracy chart shows, this gun will shoot.

No holster means no competition, so I took the Staccato XL to my local Steel Challenge team's training day and set up the weapon from the bottom right. I provided enough loads of Remington 115 ammunition and used that. Staccato XL has attracted the attention of other shooters (some in the Grand Master, Master or A class), who are willing to try it. They were as impressed as I was with the shooting features and the bike acceleration features. And even more impressive when I tell them that they shoot full firms.

At this point, there are over 600 rounds through the gun with nothing but my original strip and oil, and no misfires of any kind. The Staccato XL 2011 9mm is the perfect addition to an already popular line.
