5.7mm vs 9mm

5.7mm Vs 9mm - The introduction of the Ruger 57 sparked renewed interest in the 5.7x28mm round. FN developed the 5.7mm to be a defensive round primarily for handguns and small personal defense weapons. Coincidentally, this is roughly the same area loaded with the 9x19mm cartridge, one of the most popular rounds on the market today. So what are the advantages (if any) of 5.7 vs 9mm?

We often refer to 9x19mm ammunition as 9mm Luger, and for good reason. The German military wanted a round with a bit more punch, so George Luger widened the neck of the existing 7.62x21mm cartridge to make a 9mm diameter round. The P-08 Luger pistol and the 9mm Luger (aka 9mm Parabellum) quickly became symbols of World War I and then World War II.

Second-line soldiers soon adapted the Luger pistol for a second purpose as a defensive weapon. The Artillery Luger has a longer barrel and higher capacity magazine, as well as a removable stock that turns the pistol into a carbine. This gave second-line troops a more effective defensive option operating at longer ranges.

In addition, the German MP18, one of the first effective marine weapons, used the 9×19 Parabellum round. The 9mm cartridge became popular after World War I and even more so after World War II. It is now one of the most popular pistol cartridges in the world. A standard pistol cartridge for most of the world's militaries, as well as a standard NATO pistol round. The 9mm became the standard pistol round for the US military in 1985, when it replaced the 1911 pistol chambered in .45 ACP along with the Beretta 92FS.

The 9mm's widespread military use began to show some weaknesses. The 9mm is an effective pistol cartridge and is the most popular submachine gun cartridge. However, the pre-World War I 9mm created an environment where modern innovations such as bulletproof body armor were not commonly used.

During the Cold War, the increased use of body armor increased interest in ammunition capable of penetrating bullet-resistant materials, such as the M855 5.56mm rifle bullet. While the 9x19mm was effective on unarmoured targets, the main guns simply kept it at bay. This led to interest in developing handgun cartridges that were more effective against body armor than the 9mm round.

Enter the 5.7x28mm circle. Fabrique Nationale developed the 5.7mm in response to NATO requirements for a cartridge in the field and a combination of second line troops. First, it seems to be the same reason why the artillery Luger was created. That's it. However, there was a significant difference in the new specifications. NATO's requirement was a cartridge that could penetrate Class IIIA weapons at a distance of 200 meters. Because the IIIA was specifically designed to stop the 9mm round, a new type of cartridge was needed. The Belgian FN Herstal made a 5.7x28mm round to shoot it together with the FN Five-SevenN and PS90 guns.

Currently, the 5.7mm armor-piercing round is not available to the general public. With that being said, let's compare it to commercially available 5.7mm ammo to see how it stacks up against the 9mm. What are the advantages of 5.7 vs 9mm? What are their habits?

Its almost universal adoption and 70-year start in 5.7 has made the 9mm one of the most widely used calibers today. Ammunition manufacturers around the world produce 9mm ammunition. There are also 9mm pistols of all shapes and sizes all over the world.

Because of this popularity, the 9mm is the most affordable compared to other pistols. There are usually many different types of ammunition available at any given time.

9mm is also an effective defensive round. Bullet technology has been improved and the 9mm hollow point ammunition uses a proven track record. It is trusted by millions of gun owners worldwide.

The big advantage is speed and bulk. The 5.7mm round uses a lighter bullet than the 9mm round. Instead of shooting a 115 grain 9mm round at around 1100 FPS, the 5.7mm shoots 40 grains out of the barrel at around 2300 feet per second.

FN designed a 5.7mm round with a ballistic profile more similar to a rifle bullet than a pistol bullet. At 5.7mm, it has a tip and a boat-shaped tail that helps it stick through the air and increase its effective range.

5.7 vs 9mm diameter makes a difference in the gun. A 5.7mm round is less than 2/3rds the diameter of a 9mm round. So you can fit most of them in the magazine. This in turn means more rounds in the gun's magazine.

9mm is not a round designed for longer distances. The shape of the nose is round, and if you look in profile, the arrow seems slightly inflated. This is not a shape optimized for long shots. That's why we use 9mm long guns, not long range.

5.7mm is the new kid on the block. That's why it doesn't hold much ammo compared to the 9mm. Even the best ammunition, Panzer Pistoul SS190, is not sold to armed citizens. According to the ATF, the SS190 is considered "weapon piercing" and is strictly prohibited for armed citizens. Additionally, the cost of a 5.7 vs 9mm round increases by about 10%, which translates to less bang for your buck (literally).

As mentioned earlier, a pistol chambered in 5.7mm will hold more rounds in a magazine than a comparable pistol chambered in 9mm. Recoil will be lighter with 5.7 vs 9mm. These two facts make a compelling case for using the 5.7mm pistol as a defensive weapon. 5. But how effective is the 5.7 vs 9mm? We shoot two guns, the 9mm CZ75 and the 5.7mm Ruger 57, and compare them in three different ways. We also shoot two different cartridges in each gun, one with a full metal jacket and one with a protective round. We measured the velocity of each round with a Pro Chrono Chronograph to determine the actual muzzle energy of each round.

A 5.7mm round can have a higher velocity than a 9mm round. However, the bullet's lighter weight means it doesn't deliver the same amount of targeted energy as a 9mm round.

The CZ75 is not known for processing the 9mm round, and the full-size metal CZ75 helped control what was out there. However, the soft recoil of a 115-grain round in a full-size, metal-frame pistol is more than a Ruger 57. As you can see from the pictures below, the CZ75's recoil was soft, but it was even softer with Ruger.

To test the defensive capabilities of the 5.7 vs. 9mm, we shot five samples of each round in Clear Ballistic Gel. The current FBI standard for defensive ammunition is to penetrate four layers of heavy layers of effective defensive ammunition, followed by 18 to 24 inches of ballistic gelatin. To follow these protocols as closely as possible, we covered the front of the gel with four layers of heavy fabric and shot the gel from 10 meters away.

We found all recovered 5.7mm rounds in the direction of movement of the base. This showed that it destroys while passing through the test environment. The nearby movement increases the temporary wound channel of the arrows. It's the same profile as our test axles, which is normal. By this false movement, two shots were fired. We chose not to include them in the results. All three stages that survived the storm did not expand. In addition, the collapse significantly slowed down every cycle in the environment. This resulted in the FBI falling short of the 16-inch minimum.

9mm Sig Sauer ammo, on the other hand, travels 16 inches and slightly further. The average penetration rate for this round was above the FBI standard. All circles are expanded in the gel. We successfully recovered all of them from the gel block.

One of the reasons NATO saw the need to replace the 9mm with something else was that it was an improvement over Class IIIA weapons.
