15 - 22 - Steel Rivalry and Metal Madness action rifle competition has grown rapidly. And while .22 LR ammo is cheaply shot, the rifle may be another matter. When you buy the right rifle, pair it with a reflex sight, and stock up on the necessary magazines, the price tab often exceeds $1,000.

Smith & Wesson's latest offering in the popular M&P 15-22 Sport .22 LR rifle offers another option.

The 15-22 is essentially an AR-15 chambered in .22 LR with a trigger action, familiar to those with AR-15 experience. Operating controls are the same - bolt lock/release on the top left of the mag well, top and front of the trigger on the right side of the magazine, and a standard two-position safety load behind the trigger on the left. . Remove the non-replaceable bolt on the upper tail.

The trigger is the same as the AR. The rear receiver pin pushes the gun to "crack" it, allowing the bolt to be removed, internal movement to be gained, and the barrel to be cleared of damage. The front receiver pin will remove the upper unit completely from the lower unit if necessary.

The rifle features a 16.5-inch carbon steel barrel with an A2 flash. The forearm is an M&P 10-inch slim handguard with a Magpul M-Lok (with a two-inch M-Lok rail). A 16-inch Picatinny rail runs over it. Polymer pistol grip with six position adjustable polymer stock. Overall length is 33.8 inches and dry weight is 5.22 pounds.

The trigger is also AR-15 caliber - the single stage is 7.1 pounds on my Lyman Digital Gauge. It's heavier than most would like, but several of my club members who shoot the 15-22 in competition tell me that the AR-15 Mil-Spec trigger works quite well in the 15-22.

The M&P 15-22 Sport OR is available in three different SKUs, priced at $469, and the SKU I tested was the 12722, which has a 25-round magazine. There are additional magazines, and two magazines should take any shooter through the 25-round Steel Challenge round. SKU 12723 (Compatibility) is the same gun but has a 10-round magazine. SKU 12724 (more compatible) ships with a 10-round magazine and ejects the A2 flasher.

The M&P 100 sight is a one-piece tubular dot sight with a 4 MOA variable intensity dot sight. It measures 4.75 inches fore-and-aft and features an M1913 Picatinny rail mount that mates with the rifle's rail, while providing infinite eye relief, allowing it to be mounted anywhere on the rail. The mushroom/sight axis distance is about 2.75 inches. It runs on a single CR1620 battery (included) and comes with a lens hood.

The round, 4-MOA dot can be illuminated in red or green, with a single reset switch to control brightness. Click on its positive, then turn the switch to adjust the brightness to red or turn it more to green. Windage and elevation adjustment ¼ MOA positive click setting.

I took the gun out of the case, cracked the gun in the back case, and removed the bolt. A light lube was applied to the bolt and other obvious bearing points and the gun went back together. This was the only polishing or cleaning required during the 500+ cycle test.

For the test loads I chose a mix of standard velocity (1070 fps subsonic) and high velocity loads that have proven to work in rifles and pistols. Secondary loads consist of CCI Standard Velocity 40-grain hard lead, Aguila Target 40-grain hard lead and CCI Clean 22 (Blue, Sousse) 40-grain coated hard polymer. The high velocity loads are CCI Mini-Mag 40 grain insulated hard, Aguila Super Extra 40 grain insulated hard and Federal 40 grain lead hollow point hunter match.

I started loading the magnet with a 25 round CCI standard. The large, unobtrusive buttons made it easier and the magazine loaded to its 25-round capacity without issue. The next step is to zero in on the 25-yard bank view.

The glaring lens cap hit the edge of my wrist, but it was simple to rotate right, left or even down. I decided to treat them as removable lens caps, so they were removed and re-installed.

The first group of three is about six inches tall and four inches straight. The active click setting zeroed it out with more than half the magazine.

Next a couple of white cut targets were set up that mimicked the steel competition, and I thoroughly checked each load through the rifle as I ran. The 4-MOA dot was very bright and quick to find, and the window was large enough to get on target quickly. Although the dot is the same in red and green, to me the green dot felt a little bigger and "brighter". This is because green is a more visible part of the human spectrum, but the ability to switch between red and green was a nice feature.

A reset switch made it easy. No push buttons - turn the switch to quickly select color and brightness, or turn off the scene. This will definitely speed up the "Prepare Load" and "Clear Download" process. I liked that design feature.

Accuracy testing was next. The operational AR-15 action has proven to be one of the most accurate semi-automatic rifle actions (probably with the bolt chamber locked). The M&P did not disappoint. Connecting the red dot to half power provided a very accurate point of aim, even with a heavy trigger, and the additional accuracy chart shows that this gun is more competitive than just hitting d-plate irons.

After that, it was a trip to my club for our normal mid-week training session. I went through a few steps and then handed the rifle over to my friends (all in G or M RFRO steel competition grades). A lot of people have shot the M&P 15-22 Sport, and at launch, the consensus is that the gun is "good enough to ride." At this point I had over 500 rounds through the gun with no more cleaning and polishing than it had out of the box. No load, no failure with no load.

The M&P 15-22 Sport has a great history, and these new models can trade cheaply for the action rifle competition. He can take out a match.
