19 Forty Five - How many B-21 bombers will the Air Force order? Will the Air Force really get the 140 or so new B-21 Raider bombers some have claimed they want or need? Over the years, the Air Force has maintained that it is looking to buy about a hundred new stealth bombers. The threat environment is ever-changing, and air combat planners want an agile airframe to answer the call. This versatility is a selling point for the B-21 as forces consider future warfighting requirements. The Biden administration is proposing to spend more money on new bombers, signaling the Pentagon's confidence in the program.

In the latest defense budget proposal, the Defense Department would allocate $3.25 billion for the B-21 in FY23. This compares to FY22 when the Air Force saw an increase of $2.87 billion - $320 million.

The B-52, B-1, and B-2 are aging and require substantial upgrades every year. Even the B-2, whose flying wing design still surprises people, is more than 30 years old. The B-2 is refitting a sensor called the new Defensive Management System which has been scaled back to focus on the cockpit with modern displays and graphics. The Air Force is also retiring the B-1B Lancer bomber, 17 of which have been taken out of service.

It will be interesting to see if the B-21 can fly within the next year, and if so, it will send the message that this is a viable program to reach 100 aircraft in five years with annual budget increases.
