Advocate Physical Therapy Locations - If you've heard of the "PT Fam" and wondered what it is, here's a reminder. If so, I am here to tell you that they are. When I was in Washington DC. I was at the 2019 Federal Advocacy Forum (FAF) and either learned all this or got stronger. Let me explain further what this means.

Walking into a room full of passionate, intelligent people dedicated to the physical therapy profession doesn't make you feel any connection. When you start a conversation with someone, you are speaking a common language and working toward a common goal. Connect automatically. I'm not saying everyone you meet will go home as the forever best friend you text every day, but here's what I'm saying...

DC One of the most energetic and engaging conversations I've had was with a student whom he had just met for the first time two minutes ago. We discovered we had similar interests in the practice environment and were on the exact same page as to why!We exchanged her Twitter handles in no time.

Keitha's Physical Therapy Success Story

On Sunday, I got on a plane with her MN student, whom I had never met before. I flew in with the same people on Tuesday and I am looking forward to seeing them again, this time as friends and looking forward to getting together at future events!

I happened to have lunch with a man from another state connected to the clinic in Minnesota where I had my first practice. I got his business card. He told me to contact him if I needed any help.

These experiences were happening all over the place in just 2.5 days he had. I am grateful to have experienced the physical therapy community at FAF! Open your mind to get to know our professional community. You can learn about #PTFam.

A town hall was held on the first night of the forum to brief on the current state of the work being done for physiotherapy. I was drawn back to all the work that was being done for our profession that didn't show up in classrooms or clinics every day. advocating for us in. APTA makes sure we are not forgotten in the laws and regulations that play an important role in our practice! Collect public policy priorities targeting issues affecting our profession and patients. These 2.5 days on the forum have given me the opportunity to present and speak on some of these issues. I was recently told by a physical therapist in my hometown, "I think people and teachers need to learn more about physical therapy because no one knows what we do." Thankfully, we can say that's what we're trying to do right now! Educating governments and society about physical therapy is part of the work being done. I was able not only to witness this first hand, but also to be actively involved in this education and advocacy at the FAF.As members, we are the APTA, so if we want to see dynamism in our profession, , you must be ready to support our association. We are grateful to see the effect of APTA membership and PT PAC support.

At the Federal Advocacy Forum, be prepared with what to talk to your representatives, senators, or their staff. We were briefed on specific issues prior to our departure from DC and introduced to the topic while on the forum. They also make time to practice with our group in Minnesota. We were able to sift through the chunks of things we wanted to say and arrive at what we wanted to share with our reps. You will be ready and there will be people there to back you up.Beyond preparation is physical therapy education. Every day we are overwhelmed with what physical therapy is and what it can do for us.Because we are experts in this field, we bring our experience and knowledge to our education. Talking with my reps about the future of physical therapy and, by extension, my job has been a powerful experience.

One of the issues we brought to the Capitol was the inclusion of physical therapists in the National Health Service Corps (NHSC). This is a student loan repayment program that helps you practice in certain areas where medical professionals are in short supply. There are more than 7,026 health worker shortage areas nationwide. NHSC currently does not have a physical rehabilitation provider. Adding a physiotherapist can fill areas of the country in need of the preventive, rehabilitative, and pain management services that physiotherapy can provide. As a non-pharmacological treatment for pain, we know that physical therapy is a strong player in fighting the current opioid crisis. Must be part of the service. No change in budget. We are not asking for more money. We seek eligibility into the NHSC application process because we know we can provide the necessary skills in the areas of rehabilitation, prevention and pain management. (You can view the emails received about this particular issue and take action!)

Coming back from the Federal Advocacy Forum, I am even more grateful to be a part of the physical therapy profession. I hope everyone can enjoy this feeling! We encourage everyone to step up and participate in some way to advance the profession and advocate for our cause. We have found ourselves part of an incredible community of professionals who are supported by strong professional associations and who can advocate for our work and the health of our patients.
