22 Ammo Shortage - Hello, Welcome to another edition of The Rimfire Report in this weekly series where we discuss and explore various guns, ammunition, styles and ideas around the world of rimfire guns. 22 Ammo Shortage
Although the .22LR is hard to find at the time of writing, it still has the same advantages as it did before the price increases and shortages. This is not to say that centerfire ammo is less important, but rather that the value of your expensive rimfire ammo has taken on an entirely new role. So in all of this, don't think I'm just saying you should shoot .22LR without care, you still need to consider your stock and your ability to fill your .22LR reserves to an acceptable level.

The .22LR is widely considered an inexpensive caliber to shoot. Save for specialty weapons like match grade ammo or specialty hunting ammunition, the .22LR is still one of the least expensive cartridges to shoot. Current prices (based on a 50 round box) put the .22LR right at 10 cents per round. Although that price is significantly inflated, it is a full 8 cents less than a 50 round box of Tula 9mm 115g ammo.
So no matter what you're doing, whether it's practice, competition, or just a good old-fashioned day, the .22LR remains one of your most economical options for handgun use. On that note, in general, .22LR rifles are less expensive than their centerfire counterparts.
As a reloader, I still pay more per round to shoot anything but a .22LR and that doesn't include my time (which I measure at zero). Keeping a shelf full of .22LR can be relatively easy. You should keep yourself up-to-date with email notifications of shipments or repacking times. Another tip I can pass on here to make sure you have a lot of cheap flashing ammo is to call your local gun store and ask if they can let you know about the shipping they get or if they can put the box aside. Two is that you are willing to pay when the shipment happens. Can they say no? Sure, but it never hurts to ask.
It will end up being a heated debate. Not only is it less expensive to practice with a .22LR, but it's much better than taking out your guns, sitting inside your house, and shooting them. Dry fire training is great, but when it comes down to it, there's no substitute for the visual, physical and auditory sensations you get when firing a real gun.

Compared to 9mm or 5.56 the results of .22LR are greatly reduced and this is inevitable. But, at least, you still get the sound, the smell, the sight (of the target) and the feel of the gun being fired, which I think makes for a much more effective practice than dry shooting. I often toy with the idea of training with an air rifle or CO2, as it would still be less expensive. . This may be an idea I explore in more detail later.
All that said, there are plenty of good .22LR rifles that can serve as a good stop-gap for your go-to rifle or a rifle for those times when ammo prices make training too expensive for regular trips. I previously wrote an article about the best .22LR replica rifles, and while some of them are just for show, there are plenty of 1:1 scale replica rifles.
The idea here is that practice is key. You can spend the same or slightly more when training with .22LR. Being a fat shooter is a perishable skill and without regular practice, you can lose your edge quickly.
Even die-hard .22LR shooters know that their favorite round is not a tool for every situation. Defensively it is very attractive and for extreme long range shooting, it is ineffective due to its nature. However, one of my favorite rounds has been kept in both my pocket and my shooting skills for this busy year. The U.S.A. -()- Ammunition shortages are not only showing signs of compromise, but they could get worse as the ruling Democrats see a bloodlust in taking away the rights of gun owners these days. The local gun shops I visit are usually empty twice a week, and when a gun comes in, a few boxes at a time, they are all gone within a few days. I have been going into shops and shops and people come in asking for this or that money, and they leave disappointed because what they want is as difficult as changing lead into gold.
As someone who collects and shoots what many consider to be outdated models (as long as they can get the job done, I find that it doesn't work anymore), it's been my experience that sometimes it's best to find what's trendy or a replacement. Popular not only during ammo shortages. Can't find that 6.5 Creedmoor? However, what about the Swedish Mauser 6.5 x 55mm? I often see boxes of it on the shelves these days, and ballistically speaking, the two measurements are so close that if you're hunting a white deer, the deer won't know the difference.
What about Milsurp rounds during ammo shortages? Can't find a 7mm-08, how about a 7 x 57mm Mauser? This is one of the best military hunting and hunting rounds you could ask for, and again, I see a lot lying around and don't seem to be very interested. Since our alphabet problem doesn't seem to be solved anytime soon, or anytime soon, I can tell you that everyone needs to start thinking outside the box.

Now, as most shooters know, the .22 Long Rifle is supposed to be tough.
It's a difficult skill to get your hands on, at least in any large numbers. So instead of trying to find missing letters, or spending your child's college money online at high prices, I can tell you that there are other options.
Two months ago, I found a gun that, before a year ago, I would not have thought about because of the lack of ammunition. This is a one shot H&R Sportster in .17 mag 2. The .17 Mag 2 Caliber has had a rough life since its introduction in 2004, mostly because it doesn't seem to know what round it should be used for. The .17 Mag 2 is a .22 LR Stinger case capable of taking a .17 round weighing 17 grains at an advertised velocity of 2,100 fps.
