ANSBACH, Germany (Aug. 9, 2019) -- The 12th Combat Aviation Brigade welcomed Col. John Broam as its new commander and bid farewell to Col. Kenneth Cole during a change of command ceremony at Katterbach Airfield on Aug. 9.
Cole commanded the 12th CAB from June 2017 until today when he passed the colors to CAB Broam. The passing of the colors is a tradition that symbolizes the passing of responsibility from one commander to another.
Brig. Gen. Christopher Norrie, commanding general of the 7th Training Command, hosted the ceremony and praised the accomplishments of the 12th CAB under Cole's command.
"Ken and his team have built a unit with a reputation across Europe of ready and lethal aircraft," Norrie said during his remarks to those gathered.

"It's no surprise to me that when commanders need air assets, the Griffins of the 12th CAB are always their first call," he said. "The training and air support they provided have directly contributed to the success of USAREUR, the 7th ATC, NATO and our European partners and allies. Col. Cole and his team epitomize the US mission in Europe."
Commenting on the 12th CAB's efforts over the past two years, Norrie spoke of more than 16,000 wing rotator hours logged in support of U.S. and allied training.
"Sixteen thousand hours, that's over 600 days," Norrie said. "If you think about it, Ken and his team have basically been flying over Europe continuously for almost two years."
"We are a trained, ready and lethal force that stands shoulder to shoulder with our allies and will stand strong against our countries' enemies," he said. "Because we are Griffins, we are better trained and we will fight with all our strength."

As Norrie left the podium, Cole stood up to address the audience and thank everyone in attendance. "This is truly a beautiful day to celebrate the partnership between our two great nations."
"That partnership has come alive before you today," Cole said, extending a hand to Soldiers of the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade as they stood on the airfield in front of several Chinook helicopters.
Cole compared the 12th CAB trip to the Apollo 11 moon landing fifty years ago and the unknowns the astronauts faced on that mission.
"We have our unknowns and the way we solve them is with people," he said. "We solve problems with people, and great people can solve impossible problems."

Before thanking his family and signing off, Cole quoted an excerpt from the Night Stalker Creed. "And when the impossible is achieved, the only reward is another mission that no one else will attempt," he said. "Well 12th CAB, I have missions ahead and I look forward to following your achievements in the future."
"We consider Katterbach our second home," he said. "This is our third opportunity in the last 20 years to serve here. As we enjoy our time in beautiful Bavaria, we look forward to meeting all of our local mayors and leaders."
Broam also addressed the soldiers gathered at the airport, thanking them for their dedication and service in the defense of our nation. "I want you to know that I feel it is a tremendous honor to serve as your commanding officer." 1 / 4 Show caption + hide caption - (left to right) 12th Combat Aviation Brigade Cmd. Sgt. Maj.
